Students of the SCOTS PGC College are encouraged to participate in the preparation and showing of led steers and stud Angus cattle as part of the College's co-curricular program.
Each year they attend a number of local shows, as well as some larger shows and competitions. The College established an Angus stud in 2001 and currently have eleven head.
The objective of the stud is to produce reliable herd bulls suited to commercial breeders in the southern Darling Downs – northern NSW region. Students learn to do all of the work involved in the showing of cattle, and have excellent facilities at the College for all of these activities. Students also prepare led steers in a small feedlot at the College.
Students receive instruction in junior parading and judging, and are encouraged to compete.
They have had a number of successes recently. These include grand champion led steer and most successful school exhibit at Pittsworth show 2009, champion school team at Inglewood show 2009, champion and highly commended titles in stud and prime cattle judging competitions as well as parading classes at the Ekka. |
